In Botanischen Gärten vermitteln inszenierte Landschaften ein Natur-Erlebnis, das auf Nachahmung und Simulation tropischer Traumwelten beruht. Ein gesteigertes Interesse an einem kleinen Stück Natur in den eigenen vier Wänden oder am Arbeitsplatz lässt sich an einer Vielzahl von Blogs zum Thema Urban Gardening und Pflanzenpflege sowie einer Flut von Instagram Posts beobachten. Die breite Nachfrage wird von Baumärkten, Einrichtungshäusern und Pop up Stores mit Accessoires und Pflanzen zu Dumpingpreisen bedient. Ist eine Topfpflanze Natur oder Designobjekt?
Welche Palmen, Sukkulenten und Topfblumen leben hinter den Fenstern und Türen der Nachbarschaft? Welche Arten sind besonders beliebt und wo kommen die Pflanzen ursprünglich her?
NachbarInnen des Raums für drastische Maßnahmen sind eingeladen, ihre Zimmerpflanzen in die Oderstraße 34 zu bringen und sie für die Dauer der Ausstellung von der Künstlerin Sara Hoffmann betreuen zu lassen. So wird eine Pflanzengemeinschaft zusammen geführt, die sich durch die räumliche Nähe ihrer „BesitzerInnen“ ergibt. Das gängige Verständnis von Pflanzen als Konsumgut wird in Frage gestellt, indem die domestizierten Wesen eine Bühne bekommen und zu AkteurInnen werden.

Zur Finissage am 9. Juli 2022 von 17 bis 20 Uhr findet die Rückholung der Pflanzen statt.
Sara Hoffmann arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Botanik und Ökologie. Ihre fotografischen und audiovisuellen Werke, Zeichnungen, Installationen und AR-Arbeiten entstehen im Kontext sozialer und gesellschaftlicher Fragestellungen und reflektieren Aspekte der Globalisierung sowie der ökologischen Krise.
Hoffmann diplomierte an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen, verbrachte ein Gastsemester an der Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam und hat das postgraduale Studium an der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln absolviert. Ihre Werke wurden unter anderem in der Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, im Folkwang Museum Essen und beim European Media Arts Festival in Osnabrück ausgestellt. Seit 2018 ist sie Mitglied im Saloon – Netzwerk für Frauen in der Kunstszene Berlins, war für diverse Preise nominiert und erhält aktuell eine Projektförderung der Stiftung Kunstfonds.

In botanical gardens, staged landscapes convey an experience of nature based on the imitation and simulation of tropical dream worlds. An increased interest in a little piece of nature at home or at the workplace is noticeable in a multitude of blogs dealing with urban gardening and plant care. Completed by a flood of Instagram posts. The broad demand is met by DIY, furniture and pop-up stores with plants and accessories for little money. Is a potted plant nature or a design object?
Which palms, succulents and potted flowers live behind the windows and doors of the neighbourhood? Which species are particularly popular and where do the plants originally come from?
Neighbours of Raum für drastische Maßnahmen are invited to bring their houseplants to Oderstraße 34 and have them looked after by the artist Sara Hoffmann for the duration of the exhibition. This brings together a community of plants that results from the spatial proximity of its „owners“. The common understanding of plants as consumer goods is questioned as the domesticated creatures are given a stage and become actors.

At the finissage on 9. July 2022 from 5 to 8 p.m., you can take your plant back home.
Sara Hoffmann works at the intersection of art, botany and ecology. Her photographic and audiovisual works, drawings, installations and AR works are created in the context of social and societal issues and reflect aspects of globalization as well as the ecological crisis.
Hoffmann studied Photography at the Folkwang University of the Arts, Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam and completed a postgraduate program in Media Art at the Academy of Media Arts. Her work has been shown in many group exhibitions including Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, Folkwang Museum Essen and the European Media Arts Festival in Osnabruck. Since 2018 she is a member of Saloon – Network for Women in the Art Scene of Berlin. She has been nominated for various awards and is currently receiving project funding from the Stiftung Kunstfonds.
