Vor zehn Jahren lautete das Wort des Jahres „Klimakatastrophe”. Heute ist daraus der weniger erschreckende Begriff „Klimawandel“ geworden. Trotz des globalen Bewusstseins über die dramatischen Auswirkungen unseres Lebensstils, tritt eine der größten Industrienationen aus dem internationalen Pariser Klimaabkommen aus. Währenddessen steigen sowohl die Durchschnittstemperatur der Erde als auch der Meeresspiegel weiter in alarmierendem Tempo an. Der Inselstaat Fidschi ist nur ein Beispiel eines Landes, dessen ganze Existenz dadurch akut bedroht ist. Mittlerweile fliehen weltweit mehr Menschen vor den Folgen von Umweltkatastrophen als vor Kriegen. Auch wenn wir hier in Deutschland noch keine verheerenden Auswirkungen erleben und die Konsequenzen bisher nicht am eigenen Leib spüren mussten – der Klimawandel verändert den ganzen Planeten.
Ökologie, Globalisierung und künstlerische Praxis werden hier in einer sinnstiftenden Symbiose verhandelt. Gegenwartskunst kann als Weckruf für Klima- und Umweltschutz fungieren. In diesem Sinne wird im Ausstellungstitel „Biopsie“ auf die griechischen Wörter bíos „Leben“ und ópsis „Sehen“ verwiesen. In der Medizin beschreibt dieser Ausdruck die Entnahme und Untersuchung von Gewebeproben aus einem lebenden Organismus. Wie in der Pathologie, bei der die entnommenen Bioptate unter dem Mikroskop untersucht werden, analysieren auch die ausgewählten Künstler*innen mit ihren Kunstwerken jeweils einen bestimmten Aspekt und regen uns damit an, Zustand, Ursache und Fortschritt der Problematik zu erkennen. Es gilt, die Spannung zwischen Katastrophe und Ästhetik produktiv zu nutzen. Kunst und Kultur können in der Debatte um eine umweltbewusste Entwicklung die Aufgabe übernehmen, Probleme künstlerisch zu adressieren, um Visionen für eine nachhaltige Zukunft aufzuzeigen.

artburst berlin e.V. invites you to the exhibtioon Biopsie. Seven artists negotiate different aspects of climate change and environmental awareness. Installation, video projection and sound art are shown in the project space Raum für drastische Maßnahmen from August 31st to September 14th, 2018.

Ten years ago “climate catastrophe” was voted word of the year. Today the term has shifted into the less frightening “climate change”. Despite global awareness of the dramatic outcomes of our current lifestyle, one of the biggest industrial nations in the world decided to leave the Paris climate agreement. Meanwhile, the temperature of the earth as well as the sea levels keep rising at an alarming rate. The small insular state Fiji is just one example for a country whose whole existence is endangered. Nowadays, more people are fleeing from the consequences of climate catastrophes than from war. Even though in Germany we didn’t have to witness any disastrous effects yet – we have to accept that climate change transforms the whole planet.
It is the aim to develop a meaningful symbiosis between ecology, globalization and artistic practice. Contemporary art can therefore work as a wake-up call for climate and environmental protection, which makes devastating images of climate catastrophes and destruction visible. With this in mind, the exhibition title “Biopsy” refers to the Greek words bíos “life”, and ópsis “seeing”. To conduct a biopsy means to examine tissue samples of a living body. In the manner of pathology, where the removed bioptates are examined under a microscope, the selected artists aim to analyze a certain aspect with the help of their artworks. The spectator should be activated to discover the presence, the cause, or the extent of the disease.
It is essential to use the tension between catastrophe and aesthetics in a productive way. Art and culture can take responsibility in this debate by addressing problems in an artistic way, pointing out visions for a sustainable future.
